Website Care FAQ

WordPress powers about 25% of the internet, and is one of our favourite tools to build flexible, easy to update websites. It does, however, have to be backed up and updated regularly, in order to stay secure. There are software updates that come out on a nearly weekly basis, and when left out of date pose a huge security risk.

That also means that the software is constantly improving – getting faster, more secure, new features – and when kept up to date, can allow your site to last years longer.

WordPress makes it easy to update galleries, text, photos, and publish blog posts, but there are many working parts and it can be difficult to properly backup site files and the database without technical knowledge.

As well, it is very common to run into errors when updating the software. When problems occur, the restoration of files and the database can be very difficult and costly, and your website could appear broken until you are able to get help repairing it.

Since us web experts follow the trends and industry news, we often have insight into which updates to expect issues from and solutions or different workarounds. We also have much better ability to repair the site if we have a  recent backup and know where the error occured.

While WordPress does have an automatic ‘update’ option in the backend, there isn’t a built-in way to backup the website first. This is dangerous in case something goes wrong and you have no backup to restore the site from. We strongly caution clients to never use this feature without training.

“Content Managed” websites (or CMS websites) like WordPress allow the ability to log in to a backend portal and make edits directly to the website. Traditional websites needed to be downloaded to a computer and manually edited file by file. Because of the easy access and flexibility, there is a much higher risk of hackers gaining entry to your website through the login area. Having a strong password and up-to-date software is the best way to reduce security risk.

Not exactly. While the site will keep working even if the software is left untouched, it becomes significantly more susceptible to hackers and malicious attacks because it doesn’t take advantage of new security updates that are released frequently. Also, when plugins are abandoned by developers, they can be left with old coding and also be targeted by hackers. Updating the software and plugins makes the website more stable, more secure, and function better than if left untouched.

In our experience, a majority of WordPress websites will experience security issues within 3-6 months of being out of date.

No, regular content updates are not included. We will do the occasional small website update (like updating your hours or phone number) without extra charge, but most web care tiers focus on keeping the framework up to date and secure, not the content.

Packages with Enhanced Website Fixes include up to 45 minutes of content updates per month.

We can create custom packages for regular monthly tasks like blog/news posts, regular banner and image updates, running promotions and managing Google Ads. As well, we can help manage your social media ads.

WordPress itself is free, and it’s true there are a variety of free plugins and theme’s available. However, in our decade of experience building websites with WordPress, we have learned that using premium theme builders and plugins result in much better, more beautiful, dynamic and customized websites. This is why we use a small suite of paid software when building all our projects.

Every web care package includes the use of our premium software licenses. Should you want to opt-out of web care, you will need to purchase your own licenses in order to continue to receive updates for these items.

*It is important to note that this does not include every software license your project may use, as each project is unique. Our main core software is included in web care, and if any additional licenses are required, we will discuss costing and renewal of them with you during development.

‘Uptime Monitoring’ means we will be automatically notified first if your website goes down, and can start working as soon as possible to getting it resolved (before your customer’s notice).

‘Security Monitoring’ means we will get notified every time someone tries to log in to your website with the wrong user name or password. When we start to see this happen repeatedly (a web attack) then we can lock them out of the website, or lock down the login page to avoid issues. Most people would be surprised at how many login attempts happen.
